Sprain Recoveries

Very often we hear frustrated clients claim they wish they had broken a bone rather than deal with the sometimes slow recovery of a significant ankle sprain.


In part, they may be right. Bones have a better blood supply than ligaments, therefore they have the potential to heal quicker. With a fracture, you are immobilised and are pretty much negating pain as you aren’t weight-bearing. 


Seeing progress once you’re out of a cast can seem a lot quicker. Once mobilisation starts, usually there is rapid progress in the following six weeks.


What everyone wants to know, though, is how long will it take to fix?


A broken bone will take up to 6 weeks to heal and up to another 6 of rehab (overall up to 12 weeks). A significant ankle ligament injury will take anywhere from 8-12 weeks of recovery. Because they are often weight-bearing in less than a week and usually very sore and swollen for the following weeks, the recovery process often seems never ending.


Poor rehab adherence and rushing to return to play with heavy strapping often leads

to re-injury. 


When recovering from a fracture, the cast initially prevents early return to play. Then there seems to be greater diligence to the rehab due to the rapid progress being made. There is also less expectation for a quick return to play from coaches (or others) because a fracture is seen as more serious.
